How do I find a good Web Developer?
Locating a good contractor in any industry first requires a clear understanding of what you actually need. Some people may be seeking a Web Developer who will guide them through the steps of developing their first website. Others may be seeking to redevelop an existing website with extended features, like e-commerce, shopping carts or the integration of databases. Others may wish to upgrade the presentation of an existing website, or improve their Search Engine rankings.
There are several easy ways to establish whether your potential Web Developer has the required skills to help you:
- Look through their portfolio of completed work and match their previous work to what you think your needs are. Most professional Web Developers are pleased to show you the results of their previous work. Use this to assess whether they are likely to be able to help you with your requirements.
- Seek to meet in person with them (or at least discuss your requirements by phone) and ask them directly about their experience and their ability to help you with your needs.
- Seek a full written quote from them and read the fine print. Many Web Developers reveal their attention to detail (or lack of) in their written documentation.
- Finally, ask for proof that your Web Developer is a member of WDANZ. All WDANZ Members agree to a Professional Code of Ethics thereby ensuring you that you are dealing with a reputable organisation.
Do you guarantee WDANZ Members work?
No. WDANZ cannot logistically do this as there are many sub-disciplines within our industry. We do however require that Members conduct their businesses professionally and abide by the WDANZ Code of Ethics. To the outsider, website design is often viewed as a single discipline, however the Web Development industry actually covers more than half a dozen disciplines*. Within the industry there can legitimately be a wide range of capabilities within the various disciplines. Larger Web Development companies usually cover all disciplines well, however most smaller companies tend to specialise.
The result of this diversity is that some Web Developers for example may be extremely capable with using Macromedia Flash, or in the graphics aspects of web design, however may not be so experienced with programming or e-commerce. Equally, some Web Developers may be experts in the area of programming however may not be so capable with Search Engine Optimisation or with Internet Marketing.
WDANZ accepts that the Web Development industry is highly diverse and that specialisation is common, and we cannot therefore guarantee that all WDANZ Members are the best in the market.
* Some of the major disciplines are: Graphics & Design, Database programming, script Programming (.NET, ASP or PHP), Content Management Systems (CMS), Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Macromedia Flash (Vector Graphics), Project Management, Web Journalism, Project Management, Internet Marketing (SEM), Standards Compliance, Usability and Accessibility.
