Brendan Battles' membership lapse

Members may be interested to note that Image Marketing Group's WDANZ membership has lapsed. Managing Director of IMG is Brendan Battles, who worked for one of my companies at the time we established WDANZ and he helped me behind the scenes in our formative days. Brendan spoke at the first WDANZ conference in Auckland. Some in the industry raised concerns about Brendan's past spamming activities however our investigations into two tabloid-type articles at the time revealed another untold side to the stories. Recently, WDANZ has been in communication with the DIA over recent claims of SMS spamming however IMG's membership expired on 2nd August 2009, and has not been renewed within the one month grace period.

Membership Fee Reduction

WDANZ announces a major fee reduction.

Effective 14 August, 2009, WDANZ is pleased to announce a reduction in Membership fees, and reopening of membership applications.

CEO, Dennis A. Smith says that the fee reduction follows an analysis of the first three years in business and a change in the usage of WDANZ services.

"The whole Internet industry has matured over the last three years, and we've moved from a business focussed on running Conferences and industry training to more of a supporting role, helping our members when they need it," he says. "To give you an example, in 2006, when we first started we actively undertook training thoughtout the country in SEO. The industry's knowledge and understanding of SEO has lifted enormously now with most web developers now much more aware of good SEO practice, regardless of how much they actually implement on their client websites."

He says that a lot of the services WDANZ provides are now behind the scenes and are self-funding, like the business brokerage, and mediation or dispute resolution services. This enables lower membership fees - making WDANZ membership more affordable in tight times.

Kiwi in Australia needs help with transfering a Joomla website and additional work.

As a New Zealander living in Australia and having had some "not pleasant exposure" to the website industry here in Oz I was very interested in my last visit to New Zealand to notice in the NZ Yellow Pages that NZ had a "Web Developers Association of New Zealand". I also read recently that several Australian companies have turned to New Zealand for their website design and upgrade - the article reported that the companies in question felt that they received a far more professional service from NZ than was their experience in Australia.

I have a website created with Joomla! with a paypay component that I need transferred from one host server to another here in Australia. Once the website is safely resident on another server then I am considering having some changes/upgrades made to my website. Does your organisation have web people who might be interested in such a project?

Get a real job partnership

WDANZ is pleased to announce a commercial arrangement with Andrew Sturge from IGCC (www.getarealjob.co.nz). IGCC places motivated graduates into New Zealand employment, mostly but not always, recent immigrants to New Zealand.

Andrew's business model is different to the traditional Employment Agency that charges the employer a percentage of the salary for the placement of candidates. He only gets his fees from the candidate when they get work so picks only the best and most motivated of the bunch!

Quite frankly, most web development companies do not have a spare $10,000.00 to optain a new staff member, and the traditional employment agency model (with what some may claim has a slightly tarred reputation) is becomming harder to make work in a tight job market.

There is clearly a growing place in the market for employing the services of a consultant like IGCC to prepare and write a CV, and to market and promote a candidate. I believe that with the tightening job market we will be likely to see providers of this type of service increase.

I've been impressed thus far with Andrew's integrity. My own web development company recently employed one of his graduates and there is no question that a graduate who is paying 20% of their salary to get a real job in the industry is VERY motivated indeed! While Andrew is based in Auckland, many graduates are able and willing to settle anywhere. Sunny Gisborne, the winterless north, or the pride of the South can all be great experiences for graduates just wanting to get their career off to a good start!

Next time you are looking for a graduate, think WDANZ and IGCC and click through to our NZ IT graduates page.

Internet UNMASKED!! Christchurch Event

On Thursday 6th August 2009, WDANZ will be holding an Internet UNMASKED!! event in Christchurch. The subject will be Thought Leadership; Winning in the digital world.

Subtitled "Seven concepts essential to building a modern web integrated business" we will be explaing how the Internet has changed time-honoured ways of business forever. Successful modern businesses do more than simply plug a website into their business - they understand the new technology and the associated paradigms.

Many companies, like Google or Open Source software developers, now have an "upside-down" approach to doing business where enormous value can be created by giving away goods or services previously sold and jealously guarded as corporate property. Dennis will take attendees on an exciting journey explaining conceptually how any traditional business can grasp the power of the Internet and transform themselves into industry thought leaders, and grow their business while others around them may be hurting, hemorrhaging, downsizing or dying.

This one hour presentation will be followed by a workshop where local WDANZ members can assist with Internet and website guidance.

Third Year Annual Review

Exactly three years ago on the 4th July 2006 we all set out on an adventure. With a clear vision, a lot of time and money and WDANZ was born! Some of us grabbed the chance to be seen as professionals and thought-leaders in the industry. We threw our weight behind anything that was going and generally we all got the returns we sought. Others stood back and said "We'll see how it goes", and joined us later. Others were simply not interested for whatever reason. The initial negativity from a few of the PHP boys is long gone with only positive press in the last couple of years.

Certainly, three years down the track and we have helped many in the industry in dozens of different ways. While of course I'd like things to be better in some areas, overall given what we've achieved, I'm actually pretty happy!

Here's my analysis of our achievements:

Overall

Overall 2009 has been a plateau. Membership has remained stable but I have spent most of my energies in the second quarter working in my own web development business, establishing Agencies around the country. We have managed to tuck in a few Internet UNMASKED!! and Emerging Talent events here and there as they fitted into my travelling schedule. Working with the government agencies, and other industry groups however has been a pretty up and down experience as they've come and gone and members have variously shown interest then no interest in what we've done.

A very strong brand.

This is the area that I'm most pleased about our achievements and which endorses the original decision to establish WDANZ as a commercial operation rather than as a committee. WDANZ is now increasingly recognised in the business community as a bone fide business representing web developers in New Zealand. It is not enormously well known outside of the industry but it always receives wide acceptance in the role that it performs - an association of New Zealand web developers who just wish to be seen as professionals.

Business brokerage.

Believe it or not, to date this has one of the most successful aspects of the WDANZ operation. Buying and selling a business is not a public thing. One doesn't put a sign up and say "I want out of the industry! Who wants to buy me?" Web developers wanting to buy or sell their business often require assistance - not only in valuing their business but often more importantly HOW to value their business. We have assisted many people from both sides of the equation - buying and selling - actually completing sales in some cases and facilitating others.

Dispute resolution.

Anyone who has been in the industry for more than 6 months knows how easy it is to end up in a conflict situation. There are a lot of "gotchas" in our industry and WDANZ provides a lot of valuable assistance to both the public and the industry. In most cases we have been assisting people who have not used a WDANZ member - as you would expect. We have provided evidence for court hearings, full and partial mediation and given a truckload of technical advice to many grateful people. Some of this has been gratis and some of it on a commercial basis. We have also arranged complimentary website development from our members for people who have had their fingers burned in some way. Again this is not the sort of thing that you shout about "Hey, we had a fight with a customer, and WDANZ helped get us out of a pickle!" is not really the sort of thing you normally shout about when it happens!

Support & Networking.

Many of our members say that just knowing that there is someone there at the end of the phone when or if they need help is just great. We work as a sounding board, referral centre and networking coordinators. In some areas like the middle of the North Island we are strong and have members always keen to be involved. In the lower North Island we are a little weaker, but the support service is there all the same. The South Island is growing but a little more conservative.

Sales Lead Generation Events.

The Internet UNMASKED!! book and events have been very successful at generating goodwill, sales leads and networking for the members who wanted to be involved. Events take a lot of effort to organise, market and run, and WDANZ has gradually gone from a proactive role to more passive role in co-ordinating members. While we did regular conferences to start, our conferences have changed more to a "catch-up of anyone interested" when someone is in town and to telephone introductions between members who have needs of some sort. We help members attending trade shows and running their own events. There are still a few copies of the book available and they really do generate a lot of goodwill with clients.

Emerging Talent.

We've been gradually building a service helping those entering the industry and dozens of NatColl and other students have benefited from our training. We have a good relationship with our friends at NatColl and it is important for us to help and encourage people into our industry.

DomainMasters.

Domainmasters has been up and running this year and currently lists bulk names from selected Domainers. It generates steady enquiries without promotion but we have yet to appoint someone to run the business. When we do it will become a specialist "listing and trading" website that we think has a lot of potential. It currently lists 2,209 domain names with asking prices of $5m and an estimated value of over $4m. Keep it in mind for your clients who recognise the value of a good Domain Name.

Moving forward

The WDANZ website we've had for the last couple of years has been taken down recently and replaced with a simpler one (design-wise) but it uses my own company's technology that I know and can work with easily. A big thanks to Vaughan and Karen from Contegro who have looked after us for the last couple of years. This change is also in preparation for a move to a more active, and inclusive offering with members able to contribute to the website.

We will also have slightly changed membership offerings. Before the end of 2009, we will be dropping the price of all membership categories, and opening up a public listing service of members to the web. Membership billing for the last year has been frozen so that we can backdate this decrease for the last a year. (Have you ever heard of that business practice before - freezing membership billing and backdating a decrease?)

I'll be sharing more on this in due course, but WDANZ is more and more being asked to perform a simple listing/communications service to the industry and our wish is to list the details of all web developers. In time, QuoteMasters will become more of an optional service for those that want help locating the right person for the job rather than as a source of all new business for our members.

Again, thanks to all involved with WDANZ. Make sure that you get involved when and where you can.

Your support is appreciated.
A masssive thanks to all members who participated and supported the Internet UNMASKED!! events. Nelson and Hamilton take the chocolate fish award for the best turnouts from the SOHO, SME and NFP sectors - dozens of people showed up and loved the events. Hamilton and Invercargill take the award for most positive responses from WDANZ members, both who are all geared up to run IU events all by themselves now.
NETWORKING DINNER - With Guest speaker Neil Butler, Executive Director and former CEO of Optimation New Zealand Ltd.

Subject: "Surviving and thriving through market chaos "

The rapid slide into global economic chaos has the potential to leave New Zealand software businesses struggling to secure the financial support and investor capital they need to survive. But the wholesale disruption of traditional models will also open up new opportunities for smart operators.

As the founder and director of Optimation, Neil Butler has been through this before.

His company pursued several new business models, including an export-focused joint venture with a major multinational, which enabled it to survive the fallout and come out the other side stronger and more competitive.

Neil will reflect on his experiences and talk about what worked, what didn't work, and the traps that await the unwary grasping for a life raft in these uncertain times.

About Neil Butler:

Neil Butler is Executive Director and former CEO of ICT services company Optimation New Zealand Ltd.

Neil started the company back in 1992 with an initial focus on technically challenging software projects that had significant security requirements.

Building on this core capability, Optimation has grown to offer a full range of software, technology and managed services, and is now one of the Top 25 New Zealand ICT companies in the MIS Strategic 100.

Neil's experience in the software industry has run the gamut of business models, including large-scale bespoke development projects, development of packaged software for specific vertical markets, product acquisition and re-development/enhancement, and international partnerships. He is currently focusing on researching further growth opportunities for Optimation, including potential merger & acquisition activity.

Neil is actively involved in a number of industry groups including the New Zealand Hi Tech Awards, and is a member of the Institute of Directors.

The Web Developers Association of New Zealand (WDANZ) begins its nationwide roadshow with events in Rotorua, Tauranga and Gisborne, the first week in July.

Named Internet UNMASKED!! the events are free educational seminars (and optional paid workshops) suitable for the SME business market and for Not-For-Profits, such as schools, churches, community groups and charities. Internet UNMASKED!! is supported by The Radio Network, NewstalkZB in Rotorua, Tauranga and Gisborne.

Past attendees have spoken highly of the professional way that the experienced speakers have shared practical helpful tips and advice. Russell Holland for example, is from Gisborne and has been in the IT industry since before the Internet was born. He calls himself an IT E-vangelist.
"Education about how to use the web as a business tool has always been at the forefront of my approach with clients," he says. "I will be presenting the session called 'How to get your website higher on Google' which shares three simple secrets. Most people don't understand that they only have to do a few basic things right with their websiteand they will catapult their website up the listings!"

Tony Rigden will be covering the subjects Video on the Web and Internet security. A keen videographer himself, Tony has been a computer programmer for over 20 years and has a wealth of experience to draw on. "Internet Security is not a simple subject, even though everyone is looking for a quick fix," Tony says. "It's a bit like securing your car. Everyone should do the basics to protect it, and you can secure it to some degree, but if someone else is determined to break in they'll find a way. I will be sharing on how to do the basics right, and protect you or your business from breakins, identity theft and the other nasties out there".

The founder of WDANZ and author of the book Internet UNMASKED!! is IT Entrepreneur, Dennis A. Smith. A prolific web developer in his own right, Dennis will be presenting the immensely popular presentation entitled '80 Tips and Tricks for website owners'. This covers dozens of topics related to the Internet. "We have worked hard over the last couple of years to develop ways how to present Internet information in a way that business people can understand. Our speakers are experts and really care about helping others in their business or organisation".

A government grant enables all Not-For-Profits attending the events to a FREE copy of the book Internet UNMASKED!! (value $39.99).

DomainMasters now live

The DomainMasters™ DNS cut over last night at 9.00pm (as scheduled) and it has now propagated to most ISPs.

We've all worked hard on DomainMasters™ and we are pleased to launch with 3681 Domain Names with some real stunners in the list! Have a browse through the names and keep them in mind for your clients. Of course, WDANZ members all have discounts on DomainMasters™ services.

For those of you interested in Domain Names, feel free to Register on the Forum and put in your penny's worth. Send your Domain Names to us for listing anytime.

Dennis is particularly pleased that his efforts to put DomainMasters™ together have now all come to fruition. He says that he seems to have been talking about it for years! Dennis was actually one of the few original Domain Name investors going back to 1999, and for those of you interested, he has a good write-up of the Domaining Business here: http://www.domainmasters.co.nz/domaining.php

Some of the finer details on the website are still being sorted, but feel free to offer us your comments and suggestions.

Domain Appraisers (a secondary appraisal service) is scheduled to kick off in the new year as will the WDANZ/DomainMasters™ marketing efforts of the website and aftermarket services.

DomainMasters™ membership services will be developed steadily. The first offering to Domainers and WDANZ members will be priority access to new listings (i.e. within the 48 hour window prior to public listing). It's touch and go whether we will have this service operational this side of Christmas, but it might be possible if there is strong support from you all for the priority service.

All things being equal, we are expecting the current listing of 3681 Domains (with an asking price of $16m, and a realistic valuation of $11m) to probably double over the next week or two, giving us all a pretty meaningful opportunity to work together for the common good.

DomainMasters

As previously mentioned a soft-launch will occur on 22nd October where WDANZ members and Domain Name investors will be able to list, view and use the DomainMasters database. The current listing stands at 1745 domain names, with many more, possibly thousands, expected over the coming weeks as the word gets out in the Domaining community. Some of these names are TOP domain names.

Some points to note:

* The service will launch with a FREE service to Domain Name investors with 100 or more names. All members should be at least aware of the names available for their clients in the early days so that their clients can be the first to get the best names.

* WDANZ members and Professional Domain Name investors (Domainers) will have exclusive access to the entire database on 22 October. You will have a small window, possibly only a week or two in which you have exclusivity, before the public can view, buy and sell.

Special report - Digital Development Forum

The first Digital Development Forum has just finished in Wellington. In attendance were 150 heads of New Zealand based ICT groups and associations including WDANZ.

Fran Wilde convened the event under the direction of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology David Cunliffe, who attended, spoke, and answered questions from the floor. Judith Tizard (Minister of Consumer Affairs, Minister Responsible for Archives New Zealand, Minister Responsible for the National Library, Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Associate Minister of Commerce and more) also attended and supported the Minister.

A very broad section of the community was represented, including business, community, creative & cultural, education, local government and of course the ICT industry.

Dennis attended and represented WDANZ at this event, attending the business group convened by Paul Winter, EMA (Central). WDANZ also donated a copy of the book Internet UNMASKED!! to every attendee, a retail value of over $5,000.00. This gesture was very well received by the delegates.

Here are a few take-homes from the day, just received in from Dennis in
Wellington.

The Minister David Cunliffe has been seeking a single voice from the IT industry for a while. With the demise of ICT-New Zealand (an effort to bring very tight structural collaboration), it appears that the new initiative will have legs, probably because the individual organizations will remain separate entities under the constitution; the lessons from previous experiences; and the aim is to work together with existing organizations in their current structure.

The government's Digital Strategy 2.0 (http://www.digitalstrategy.govt.nz/Digital-Strategy-2/) aims to capitalise on the digital revolution currently under way.

As quoted by Computerworld (http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/A3031B45BA59015CCC2574CC00098EFC),
Ernie Newman (TUANZ) suggested that the Digital Development Forum could democratise the Digital Strategy, making it "the nation's strategy not just the government's".

The minister said today that Forum membership is self-selecting. The Forum's job is to set the strategy for the Digital Development Council. Cabinet has approved seed funding, and wants to facilitate and provide policy levers to affect legislative change.

The minister emphasises that he is "passionate to ameliorate* the digital divide."

Dictionary definition: [to make or become better, more bearable, or more satisfactory; improve.]

The Forum divided into several groups based on sector type (Business, Community & Voluntary, Local Government, Education, ICT, and Creative & Cultural) and discussed the four "enablers" as they related to their own sector:

Connection

Confidence

Capability

Each group at the Forum discussed these enablers, and the general feedback from attendees was that there is wide acceptance of the need and importance of collaboration.

Fran Wilde made mention that Kiwis tend to want to work in silos however they network well, with only two degrees of separation between anyone in New Zealand.

eHeath was a major sector not represented at the Forum today, however it will be involved in the DDF shortly.

The new executive director is Paul Alexander, ex the Prime Minister's and Cabinet office.

David Cunliffe expects that the focus will be moving from how to obtain more bandwidth, to more on how to capitalise on increased bandwidth.

Judith Tizard talked about the difficulties of copyright issues and seeks suggestions and ideas from vested interests and copyright holders.

There was plenty more in relation to the individual sector/group discussions, which I'm sure Dennis will mention more of in due course.
WDANZ
Dennis reports that good value has been created for WDANZ and WDANZ members today through networking with other organizations - corporate, government and other organizations.

Watch this space, he says!

Please feel free to make any comments or ask Dennis any questions when he returns tomorrow morning.

IT Sisters in growth mode

WDANZ member Designer Websites have just quadrupled their client-base with the recent acquisition of Dataview's client-base. WDANZ facilitated the sale. There is a media release on the Home Page of the WDANZ website. (www.wdanz.co.nz)

The title of the story ("IT sisters in growth mode") contains more from a human interest perspective than just IT, as one of the girls in the picture is very pregnant (Get it? Growth mode!) Seriously, it is just great to see a couple of lively characters (they call their team "funky" actually) enter the industry relatively recently and then to develop their business so well.

Rapid growth is exciting but also challenging, so we wish Emma and Jane all the best. We have helped the girls in the past, discussing some of their plans and intentions and helping them when we can. This is an important but unseen part of the WDANZ services, where members can just make a phone call and drop in for a chat when the need arises. We have guys (and girls) popping in all the time, and we love helping everyone however we can.

NZSA meeting

If you didn't already know, New Zealand Software Association (NZSA), Canterbury Software Inc (CSI), Website Developers Association NZ (WDANZ) and Wireless and Broadband Forum (WBF) signed collaborative agreements to form the Software NZ Alliance.

OCTOBER NETWORKING DINNER - ALL are welcome to ATTEND!
Date: Tuesday 14th October 2008, Auckland
In collaboration with New Zealand Software Association, the Wireless Broadband Forum and Canterbury Software Cluster, WDANZ members attend at the discounted member rate.
Guest speakers Chris Sparshott (IBM) and Simon Young(iJump).
This month's Subject:
"Making sense of Social Networking"
Chris Sparshott will talk about IBM's view of Social Networking from a business perspective and tools; enterprise benefits of social networking and collaboration.

Simon from iJump will then talk about blogging, podcasting, online video or social networks - from what they are to what people do with them.

About Chris Sparshott
Chris is IBM's Collaboration and Social Networking specialist. With over 10 years working for IBM in the UK and latterly in NZ, Chris can offer a wonderful insight into the direction that IBM is taking in this space. His talk will touch on the tools required for social software for business, collaborative application and integration services, mash-ups, and Web 2.0.

Feedback he received from a recent presentation that he made in Australia on this very topic described him as "visionary" no less. However, I'd personally describe him as grounded, and actually able to articulate this material in a readily understandable format!

About Simon Young
Since 2000 Simon has written and spoken extensively about new media, as well as being a heavy user of new media tools.
He's educated New Zealand marketers about the opportunities and threats of new technologies through the pages of NZMarketing magazine, Idealog and iStart .
He's spoken regularly at PR and communications conferences since 2004 on the topic of blogging and consumer-generated media.
Simon also founded copywriting agency SimonYoungWriters and cofounded the world's first consumer-generated documentary about Generation C, Looksy.org .
Both speakers are entertaining and informative, making this a "not to be missed" networking occasion for all!
Please note; for catering purposes, numbers are finalised by Friday the 10th, so please RSVP to events@nzsa.org.nz or register online so you don't miss out!
Email events@nzsa.org.nz to register. Costs are $35 for WDANZ members, $50 for non members.

IT Sisters in Growth Mode

IT entrepreneurs Jane and Emma Boddie have recently quadrupled their client-base with the acquisition of Dataview's development and hosting clients.

Originally established in Hamilton but now based in Ponsonby, Emma says that growth through acquisition is a proven model for business growth. "We've really enjoyed the process of building a successful web development company from scratch, bringing it to the big smoke, and then securing another business."

Emma and her sister Jane started Designer Websites in 2005, and have grown the business quickly. "With the recent acquisition, our client-base has grown from 120 to 500, which is a giant step forward for us, but one we are really excited about."

"Prior to working in the web space, my experience was in Sales and Marketing. Jane has come from an accounts background and she has extensive web experience."

"Amongst other things, Dataview provided wholesale services to the industry. We're a young and funky team who want to work with other creatives in the industry. We are excited to be able to build on Dataview's existing technology, eventually helping graphic designers nationwide to develop websites for their own clients under the www.designerwebtools.co.nz brand."

The Web Developers Association of New Zealand (WDANZ) played a critical role in Designer Websites growth strategy. "This is a great step for the IT sisters" according to John Jones of WDANZ. "Emma and Jane approached us a few months or so ago looking at their business options. After having already developed a successful web development business, they sought to expand through acquisition. The Dataview business was listed with us shortly thereafter. While a dozen or so WDANZ members registered interest, these girls negotiated the business purchase first. They should do well."

Privacy

You may have noticed my comments in the ICT news section above about Gmail and eGovernment. Both of these raise questions that I would have been keen to discuss with Marie Schroff, The New Zealand Privacy Commissioner, in her late August forum (though unfortunately I'm tied up that week and can't go). It is really good to know that in this country we have a Privacy Commission that is genuinely working to protect our rights as citizens, yet the digital age opens up such incredible opportunity for potential control of populations that it seems semi-inevitable that this control will one day be exercised.

Why am I so pessimistic? The answer is history. Besides, democracy doesn't have a good track record; it's seldom been known to last more than about 200 years. Even now anti-terror laws have already stripped away quite a few traditional democratic rights, especially in the United States, and it would not be unrealistic to wonder if we're on a slippery slope.

I'm trying not to get political here, but the Internet in particular raises massive issues around privacy, the control of information and the long-term effects of the information age on society and government. I don't think we can turn the clock back, and I have to say I love the efficiency of on-line information, but as IT professionals it is a subject I believe we need to take seriously. If we can do nothing else we can at least do our best to protect OUR customer's client data. This is neither easy nor cheap, yet it may not be too hard to sell to customers if they understand the potential embarrassment and damage to their business that a breach can cause them.

Anyway, a good place to start in all this is finding out how to comply with the privacy act: privacy.org.nz/how-to-comply-with-the-privacy-act/. Your company may also benefit from entering into some security consultancy - if you would like a good contact in this field please let me know and I'll identify someone appropriate to your needs.

Here's one tip though from my own experience - avoid storing sensitive data in shared hosting accounts. Shared hosting can be quite vulnerable to cross account violations. Any on-line business that is collecting sensitive client information should at the very least be hosted on a VPS (Virtual Private Server), or even its own dedicated server. VPS space in NZ is available from about $60/ month upwards depending on additional services, space, etc. (e.g. www.net24.co.nz/vps_overview.php)

Growth through Acquisistion

It really surprised me recently how many responses I got to the notice I sent out about a reasonably large Auckland web business for sale. I've been thinking since about some of the potential pluses and minus of growth through acquisition. It can certainly fast track business growth, but here are some things I would asking myself before leaping in:

* How long will it realistically take to a Return On Investment (including interest paid)?
* Can the CMS and / or hosting systems be integrated and if so how easily?
* If they can't be integrated, what are the likely support costs of the new system and how long would I be likely to have to support it for?
* What risks am I taking on around hosting? In other words, how mission critical are the sites and is the hosting risk adequately offset by the quality of solution?
* How well do the target markets of the two businesses fit together? Are they the same or somewhat different? How will any differences affect the nature of my business and my ongoing marketing plan?
* How well do the main business activities fit with my existing business?
* How will the transfer affect customer loyalty? I have heard of cases where this has been positive as well as ones where it has been negative. Is customer retention locked in through contracts or systems in any way?
* Does the brand of the company I'm purchasing have tangible value and if so what should my brand strategy be? Dump it, keep two or merge brand in some way?
* Do I want equipment, staff, leases or do I just want the customer base? Am I starting a new branch?

OK, so having raised all of these I'm not trying to put you off. Actually it was notable that a few of the businesses enquiring had purchased businesses in the past and mentioned that they were very pleased with the acquisition.

The flip side of all this business sale stuff was wondering why web businesses usually have such a low EBIT (Earnings Before Income Tax). Obviously people have low confidence in the security of business on a web company's books. I'm guessing that there is concern that the web is a fickle place where business can migrate quite rapidly. So, for those of you who are building up a business that you'd like to sell one day, what can you do to improve this perception? A better website? Good contracts? Lots of repeat work from the same customers? What else?

New Membership Pricing

As part of the MOU with NZSA mentioned above WDANZ is bringing its membership pricing more into line with that of NZSA. This means a decrease in the cost of corporate membership, but an increase in the cost of affiliate membership. A compatible pricing structure is needed for the MOU so that people don't simply pick and choose the cheapest deal to get access to both.

For Affiliate Members, who are being asked to pay a little more, we believe that the added value provided by the MOU with NZSA will more than make up for what is still a fairly nominal annual cost.

For non-web developers who want to be kept informed, we have a new category of membership (List Membership) that is free, although there are no product discounts and of course no WDANZ logo use.

The new pricing is:

$0.00 pa - List Member (a new category - non-web developer receiving email only)
$100.00 pa - Affiliate Member (up from $45.00)
$250.00 pa - Professional Member (unchanged)
$500.00 pa - Corporate Member (down to a flat-rate, from $750.00 and upwards)

Internet UNMASKED!! Launch Recap

Last Wednesday marked the very successful launch of the Internet UNMASKED!! brand (which incorporates all WDANZ activities aimed at educating the SME market in web technologies). Dennis's book, Internet UNMASKED!! - 2008, was launched during the lunchtime of the inaugural event with over 100 people present and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments along the lines that the book is easy to read, appealing, friendly and very informative. We also received a lot of enthusiastic feedback about the event itself and everyone there got great value for their money.

There will be increasing opportunity for members who are keen to get involved with Internet UNMASKED!! as we turn the www.unmasked.co.nz website into an information portal for SME's.

Dozens of WDANZ members have had their comments, names and websites published in the Internet UNMASKED!! book, and all it took them was a simple response to some basic questions we put out. This will be a great opportunity for people who wish to be seen as thought leaders in the industry, to gain real leverage from your WDANZ membership.

Please contact Dennis or me (John) if you are interested

WDANZ launches Internet UNMASKED!!

John Jones, GM of the Web Developers Association (WDANZ), announced the launch of the Internet UNMASKED!! brand, today.

“Internet UNMASKED!! is the second stage of the development of WDANZ,” Jones says “The first couple of years has been spent building membership and credibility within the IT industry. After two years, we have almost 300 members, and we are now moving out to reach the SME and Not-for-Profit sectors”.

Jones says that WDANZ will be using the Internet UNMASKED!! brand name for all events, products and services targeted at those outside of the IT industry.

“Our aim for the next two years is to build our retail presence with the Internet UNMASKED!! brand, and to continue building strategic relationships with others to bring IT related information for small business. This will be done through events, books, DVDs, and online services such as ezines, blogs, and so on”.

The book: Internet UNMASKED!! 2008 – An Essential Handbook for New Zealand Businesses and Not-for-Profits, is being launched at an event of the same name, at Ellerslie, on 16 April, 2008.

Russell Holland (WDANZ Industry Advisor) will be the MC at the upcoming event and is looking forward to the launch of the Internet UNMASKED!! book.

“A lot of members have contributed to this publication, by way of written comments, suggestions, helpful links and constructive criticism”, he says. “I believe that it will help many business people with their online strategy”.

The Internet UNMASKED!! event is jam-packed with speakers, sponsors and speed networking - which is always a real hit.”

The founder of WDANZ, Dennis Smith, is author of the book and a keynote speaker at the Internet UNMASKED!! event.

“The book has been a lot of work, but it has really enjoyable to write,” he says. “It has been deliberately written and priced in a way that WDANZ members, and others in the IT industry can easily make it available to their customers”.

Details of the Internet UNMASKED!! event and products can be found at www.unmasked.co.nz

Speed Networking a Hit at WDANZ Auckland Conference

Attendees at the recent Auckland WDANZ Conference enjoyed the frequent speed networking opportunities according to feedback received.

Web Developers Association CEO, Dennis Smith, says that speed networking has really encouraged web developers to meet others in the industry and to collaborate.

“Web Developers quite often have limited contact with others in the industry,” Smith says “and speed networking at our events really helps break the ice!”

WDANZ stops for 10 minutes every hour or so and deliberately takes time out for attendees to meet a stranger, and see if there is a way to do business together.

“Speed network is like speed dating, but for business networking. Eighty percent of attendees at our previous conference found someone they will be doing business with.”

Emma Boddie from Designer Web is a recent WDANZ member who signed up to attend the Conference at Waipuna. “I have to confess I was a bit sceptical but now I don’t regret it for a minute” she says. “The speakers were great and it was a really positive experience all round. Definitely well worth it”.

Conference Compere, Russell Holland (E-C Internet) has been an active member and leader from the beginning of WDANZ, and loves to see people working collaboratively. “The speed networking is an important part of what we do, and is always a real hit.”

Holland, based in Gisborne, has experience in helping industry groups work collaboratively. “I love what we are doing by bringing web developers together, building relationships and encouraging collaboration. "If web developers don't take the time to get out and network with their peers then they are being seriously disadvantaged”.

Wellington Conference Feedback

The WDANZ Wellington Conference created real value for attendees with very positive feedback, from attendees and speakers
alike.

Here is some of the feedback received thus far . . .

"Well done with the Wellington conference. I'm very sorry, but I cannot find any [constructive] criticism to
offer." V.B. Waihi

"I've come back with a raft of new and profitable ideas after an enjoyable conference. [The SEO] sessions alone were
worth the price of the conference." B.C. Auckland

"The Wellington conference was a fantastic educational and networking forum; all businesses involved web development
should join." J.Z. Auckland

"The Wellington conference was great. There was a vast range of speakers covering many aspects of web design that I
didn?t know that existed. I really enjoyed the presentations on web media and the web content writer. Harvey from Rage Pank
opened my eyes to a different way of using CSS." M.S. Wellington

"You have outdone yourself, AGAIN! This has been just so amazing and what the industry needs." Anon.

"I . . . thoroughly appreciated the content and speakers." T.A. Wellington.

". . . mention the exceptional quality and expertise of the seminars held on the Thursday. For any who have the
slightest interest, whether personal or professional, these workshops are a must! The SEO 101-301 is a well thought out and
researched expos?n a little understood area of web development." J.M. Christchurch

"Thanks for organising such a fabulous few days. The speakers were very inspirational - especially on the SEO
information and the way the "marketing world on the internet" is heading. It's opened my eyes and has given me some
great ideas. Well done." F.F. Christchurch

"It's my first WDANZ event, and certainly won't be my last, even as a presenter I got a huge amount to value out of
the networking and the other presentations. It's great to see that a commercial model can still deliver, and deliver
quality." J.B. Wellington. http://mangee.livejournal.com/120271.html

"This was the first WDANZ conference I have been to, and I have to say, the event was rather enjoyable." H.K.
Auckland http://www.ragepank.com/articles/98/wdanz-wellington-conference/

"The Wellington conference was a great chance to meet fellow web developers, and I especially enjoyed the 'Women in
technology' and 'Generating Income from Web publishing' presentations." K.P. Wellington

"I learnt so much about the industry surrounding the technicial side of things -- really worth the time to go!" B.T.
Wellington

"Congratulations on a well organised event down in Wellington. I came away from the conference inspired with new ideas
and looking forward to implement within my business. The WDANZ roadshows and conferences provide a much needed platform to
enable website companies to network and work together. Once everyone realises they are in room full of like minded business
professionals, the colaboration and flow of information between those who attend is excellent to see and fantastic for the
future of the industry." V.R. Auckland

Web Developers Association appoints General Manager

The Web Developers Association of New Zealand (WDANZ) has appointed IT Professional John Jones as General Manager of its business services.

WDANZ was established on 4th July 2006, by web developer and entrepreneur Dennis Smith, and has seen steady growth with 230 members nationwide. Smith says that he is happy with the take-up from the industry, and expects their membership to be around 300 by the end of the year.

"We are still in growth mode, but we already have a range of Joint Ventures and business partnerships designed to service the needs of our members. John will be running the business side of things under our Gold Tick brand," he says.

Smith says that he has kept WDANZ to a membership-only organisation with the various Joint Ventures and business services in a separate company, Gold Tick Services Ltd.

Jones has a long career in the IT industry in a variety of technical and management positions, including National Course Co-ordinator at NatColl, where he was responsible for developing the Web Design curriculum.

About the new role Jones says, "While I have a technical background I enjoy contact with a variety of people within the industry. My role will be to work with the many sectors of the industry and build upon the pioneering work of the first year. The industry partnerships we have are unique and in due course each of them will offer the industry great services."

According to Smith, appointing a General Manager will lift the organisation to a new level, enabling WDANZ to pursue additional strategic relationships with non-IT organisations.

"The first year we have been naturally more focussed on the IT industry, building and servicing our membership," he says. "Our second year will see us increasing our presence in the retail space, spearheaded with a series of business events, called "Internet UNMASKED!!" that are scheduled for nationwide roll-out from February 2008.

WDANZ Conference wraps up nationwide coverage

The Web Developers Association of New Zealand (WDANZ) Wellington Conference, just completed, wraps up a successful first year in business covering the country, according to CEO, Dennis Smith.

"The Wellington Conference is an important milestone for us in that it completes the nationwide coverage sought by the industry," he says. "When we established WDANZ, we sought opinion from the industry, and most developers asked for local events, with down-to-earth, practical speakers and support. We’ve delivered this now."

Smith says that the Wellington event was the third Conference in a year (following Auckland and Christchurch) and that he has received very positive feedback from both the attendees and speakers alike. "The general feedback we have received was that this event was vibrant and created excellent value to the attendees."

Over a dozen speakers shared their interests and expertise over two days, including Richard Naylor, Steven Heath, Jo Booth, Wayne Forgesson, Vaughan Reed, Steve Edhouse, Helen Wise, Jacqui Zelcer and Chris Claridge.

Brett Taylor, Harvey Kane, Alan Cox, Bruce Clement and Michael Brandon covered the more technical subjects including Javascript, Advanced CSS, Advanced Usability, Domain Name Appraisals, and SEO.

Speakers were pleasantly surprised at the enthusiasm and collaboration that the event encouraged. "The Conference was a fantastic educational and networking forum," said Jacqui Zelcer who represented Women in Technology. "I thoroughly enjoyed meeting others in the industry, and hearing from the other speakers."

Jo Booth, Wellington based Internet guru and WDANZ speaker says, "It was my first WDANZ event, and certainly won't be my last. Even as a presenter I got a huge amount to value out of the networking and the other presentations. It's great to see that a commercial model can still deliver, and deliver quality."

Smith says that any initial skepticism toward WDANZ has well and truly been addressed by developing a strong brand and commitment to deliver value to members. "When we launched in July 2006, there was naturally a degree of caution where developers watched to see how we went, and to see if we would actually deliver on our promises."

"In a little under a year, we have over 200 members from the Bay of Islands to Invercargill. We have also completed three successful Conferences in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington; have trained over 100 developers in SEO; and have presented to almost 1000 members of the public in free seminars from Whangarei to Christchurch."

Long-time Internet web development professional Russell Holland has been helping drive WDANZ, and was MC at the Wellington conference. "I’ve been involved in encouraging collaboration amongst the industry for years," he says "and seeing the passion that all the team commit to WDANZ is really heartening! Wellington was another good Conference with great speakers and excellent networking."

WDANZ chooses Contegro CMS

A breath of fresh air swept into the Web Developers Association of New Zealand's own website today, with a revamp using Contegro CMS, from North Shore CMS specialists Contegro Ltd.

WDANZ CEO, Dennis Smith says that the upgrade reflects the growth and higher profile of WDANZ, a year after its launch, on 4 July 2006. "Our initial brochure-style website had long since outgrown its usefulness and we required a modern portal that served increasing amounts of time-sensitive information."

"The Contegro CMS has provided a solid enterprise level platform for over 100 pages, with plenty of capacity and flexibility for our future growth," he says. The need to share time sensitive information has been met with a series of RSS feeds including news, business opportunities, sales leads, and nationwide seminars and training events.

"Our member newsletters have served a purpose, but we are now providing much more time-sensitive information. Our members need information, like for example new business sales leads that must be distributed within hours rather than days. We expect to make heavy use of the RSS feeds over the coming years," Smith says.

Integration of the Microsoft based front-end web product Contegro, into the open source in-house management system required some careful planning. Smith says that overall he's very happy with the new website, especially they way it was completed and launched on time. Brett Taylor, Natcoll Design Technology

Brett Taylor is Web Development Diploma Course Coordinator at Natcoll Design Technology in Wellington. He runs tutorials
on the various web development disciplines, including JavaScript, PHP, MySQL and Flash. He is a self-identified geek who
has continually been doing something constructive in cyberspace since 1994: programming since he was 11, ran a BBS in
1994, started making websites in 1996, as both hobbyist and professional. Passionate about the empowering qualities of
technology, knowledge and automated services, he is focused on creating better experiences for as many users as
      possible, if not all.

Brett will be addressing the use of Javascript in form validation, an area of programming that receives varied attention
from web developers. Brett will provide an introduction to modern JavaScript techniques, explaining the difference
between BOM and DOM (Browser/Document Object Models), demonstrating a cross-platform, unobtrusive JavaScript form
validating library with best-practice user feedback, using a real world example.

Brett will show a standard but varied registration form, using different kinds of fields with a range of validation
techniques including a simple Ajax checker to see if a username is taken. Sample source code will be supplied, with full
explanations of how the code works so that web developers may use and modify for their own javascript validation.
Bruce Clement, Domain Appraisers Ltd

Bruce is Managing Director of Domain Appraisers Ltd, the preferred supplier of Domain Name appraisals to DomainMasters -
the .nz domain name portal. He is an experienced database programmer and has been involved in the IT industry since
1976. Since 2005, he has been actively involved as a Domainer (domain name investor), during which time he has developed
an extensive portfolio of generic New Zealand domain names.

Domain Name appraising is an enormously challenging business with buyers naturally wanting low appraisals and sellers
seeking high appraisals. To be a successful appraiser requires extensive Domainer experience; a strong support network
of industry contacts and specialists; access to meaningful, accurate and up-to-date sales information; a strong
analytical mind and nerves of steel!

In this presentation Bruce will share the background to the launch of Domain Appraisers; several .nz domain name
appraisal case studies; some of the variables used in appraising a domain name; and the direction that he sees the .nz
domain name aftermarket will take. Bruce's insight into the little known world of the Domainer will be fascinating for

Commerce as a business advisor and lobbyist at central Government level. He was the Dean of Business Studies and Senior
Lecturer in Management and Marketing at the Christchurch College of Education. He specialises in brand communication
strategies and innovative marketing techniques for business using new media and the internet.

Chris has been involved in SME issues at a national level and international level. His activities have included
responsibility for organising the Business Forum at the Sixth APEC SME Ministers Meeting; recipient of an Asia 2000
Fellowship and the presentation of papers at international SME conferences.

Chris has an entrepreneurial background in innovation and technology management, and the development of new products and
      services.

Chris will be sharing (with passion) on how to generate revenue from web publishing. The emergence of online advertising
has created a real opportunity for web development companies. Web development companies' normal business model is to
charge clients for creating and hosting the website. The emergence of online advertising gives website development
companies an opportunity to create other forms of revenue.

The internet now consumes over 34% of total media consumption by individuals under the age of 50. Australian online
advertising has now reached AUD$1Bn or 10% of all advertising expenditure.

In this presentation Chris will talk through existing models and trends, and how website developers can reconfigure
their business models to be web publishers.
search engines. In producing CMS driven websites for small businesses, he focuses on web standards, good content and
      proper on-page search engine optimisation.

Harvey will be demonstrating best practice use of CSS within a website or application. While most websites now use CSS,
